Nusoul & Blacque Koffee

Article by Kxng Rich

This Saturday, October 14th, 2023 I attended a live performance by Nusoul & Blacque Koffee at The Logon Cafe & Pub in Beaumont, Tx. Coming into the establishment and hearing the opening acts you expect that the entertainment here would be lackluster at best. Not that the opening acts were trash, but they were just your everyday casual garage bands. The attendance wasn't huge either which served to further lower one's expectations. I watched the group leader, Nusoul, work the room for a few hours. He greeted many people, and emphasized that he would be headlining later in the night. It seemed that he somehow knew something about his performance set that nobody else was aware of.

Nusoul & Blacque Koffee can best be described as a "Concert Collective" that brings together hip-hop artist Nusoul as the defacto group leader (aka the Beyonce of the group lol) along with soul singer Jai Symone who's rifts literally move the crowd. Blacque Koffee also consists of the pianist Crystal Callahan, the drummer Joseph Egland, and the guitarist Terry Jones

Now when I tell you the atmosphere was different when Nusoul & Blacque Koffee finally hit the stage, trust me I am not lying to you. From beginning to the end this group of performers entertained the entire audience. Which in itself seemed that it would be an impossible task as the crowd was very diverse containing many older patrons, some younger people, some were enjoying drinks, others were at the pool tables, some were african-american, some were white, and none seemed like the type to enjoy hip-hop music. Nevertheless, the powerful performance moved every single person in attendance. Nusoul's classic rap style was a breath of fresh air and was perfectly complimented by Jai Symone's ability to roll from the chorus of an original track directly into a hook pulled from iconic songs by artists such as Erykah Badu, The Fugees, The Gap Band, & more. Nusoul also demonstrated an inate ability to adlib on the fly when the guitarist Terry Jones accidently knocked over his drink while moving across the stage. He was able to muster up further crowd participation by simply shouting "Damn Terry!" which incited everyone else to repeat the phrase several times as though spilling the drink was actually planned. The headlining act was capped off with Nusoul re-introducing each member of Blacque Koffee and notifying the electrified crowd that there was Nusoul & Blacque Koffee merchandise for sale, which exemplified the professionalism and ability to self promote. I Look forward to attending more performances by this gem of a collective!
